If you've been thinking about orthodontic treatment for yourself or someone you care about, you may wonder when the best time is for you to see an orthodontist. This is a very good question that many people ask and there are several ways to answer it.

Many Orthodontic Problems Are Obvious

At the most basic level, you should see an orthodontist any time you have a question about how your teeth are aligned or the quality of your bite. Sometimes, an orthodontic problem is very obvious. For example, you might find it difficult to bite and chew food or to speak clearly. Or you may have crooked teeth, protruding teeth or teeth which are misplaced. In these types of situations, you should contact our office for a exam and consultation so we can provide you with a proper diagnosis and the most appropriate treatment.

There are other conditions which are not so obvious that can indicate it's time to see an orthodontist. For example, people who breathe through their mouths, clench or grind their teeth or whom cannot comfortably close their lips are likely good candidates for orthodontic treatment. Even people whose jaws shift or make sounds as they move can benefit from orthodontic treatment as can people who bite the inside of their cheek or roof of the mouth. Teeth that do not meet normally can cause facial imbalance which is a problem that also can be corrected by orthodontic treatment. If you have any of these orthodontic problems or conditions, we encourage you to contact our office to schedule your free examination & consultation. After your examination, we will talk with you about our findings and treatment recommendations so you can decide what is best for you.

 Orthodontics For All Ages

From Your Child's First Appointment to "Finally Your Turn"

 Orthodontic Problems.

In addition to the general guidelines above, our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) have some recommendations for children. The AAO recommends that all children should receive their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. While this may seem like a young age to take your child to the orthodontist, there are good reasons why you should. First of all, young children typically have a wide disparity in tooth development. It requires the trained and experienced eye of an orthodontist to identify a potential orthodontic problem. By the time a child is 7 years old, an orthodontist can determine whether or not there is sufficient room in the mouth to accommodate all the permanent teeth.

Secondly, it is often far easier to treat many orthodontic problems and conditions when a child is young as opposed to waiting until they're older. For example, if a child has a crossbite where the upper teeth close inside the lower teeth, a palatal expander can be used to effectively treat this condition while the child's jaws are still growing rapidly. But if this condition were to be left untreated, the child could require oral surgery later in life which would be more involved and more costly.

Other common problems seen in children that can benefit from orthodontic treatment include:

  • Early or late loss of primary teeth
  • A bad oral habit like thumb-sucking or tongue thrusting
  • Mouth breathing

If you notice any of these symptoms in your child, it's time for you to schedule an orthodontic evaluation for your child. It is important to note that your child's first orthodontic evaluation does not necessarily mean that he or she will need to begin orthodontic treatment right away. In fact, most children do not start wearing braces until they're between the ages of 9 and 14.

Orthodontics for Adults

 Orthodontic Appliance Options.

Now that you know when your child should be seen by an orthodontist, it's time to talk about you! Are you ashamed by how your smile looks because your teeth are crooked? Do you routinely cover your mouth when you're spending time around others because you're not happy with your imperfect smile? Then it's time for you to schedule a complimentary consultation with a family friendly Amherst orthodontist.

If you think that orthodontic treatment is just for kids, think again! Nowadays, a great number of adults are seeking orthodontic treatment and that number grows by the day. The AAO tells us that one of every five orthodontic patients today is an adult.

One of the main reasons so many adults are choosing to undergo orthodontic treatment is because there are now many orthodontic appliances which are ideal for adults who wish to discreetly and conveniently improve their smiles like clear ceramic braces and translucent removable aligners. There is no longer any reason for adults to shy away from getting the orthodontic treatment they need because they don't want to wear visible metal braces. With so many choices in discreet orthodontic appliances, adults can improve their smiles without most people even noticing!

Adult Treatment Goes Beyond Improving Your Appearance

Improving your smile with adult orthodontic treatment goes further than just getting an amazing straight smile that's beautiful. When your teeth are aligned properly, it's much easier to clean and maintain them plus they won't be subjected to abnormal wear and tear. A straight smile can also help you bite and chew food more efficiently and speak more clearly. When your teeth are aligned properly, your improved bite will help keep your teeth healthy so you can enjoy your straight, healthy and attractive smile for the rest of your life!
